Open spaces and parks in the environment of the new cycle and pedestrian bridge

A new cycle and footpath bridge east of the Bergheim Weir will connect Heidelberg’s growing south to Neuenheimer Feld. In a grand sweeping gesture, it extends the planned cycle express link from Mannheim to Heidelberg and links up with the network planned via Patrick Henry Village to Schwetzingen.

Coming from the Ochsenkopf, the rather modestly designed bridge runs along the eastern edge of the Gneisenauplatz through the tops of the largely preserved trees. So-called Neckar balconies on the northern and southern banks lead directly over the water. Above the Neckar, the bridge widens out into a seating landscape.

On both sides of the Neckar, new open spaces will be created with different facilities in a design language based on the design of the bridge. The Gneisenauplatz becomes a small protected park.
