Restructuring the urban spaces along the B31 in Freiburg's City

The planned construction of the city tunnel is aimed at relieving traffic congestion along the Dreisam River. However, this project also provides a unique opportunity for Freiburg to restructure the adjacent urban network and river space. The study for the surfaces in the respective area, examines existing and emerging potential from an urban development and open space planning perspective, while developing guiding scenarios in interplay with the traffic plans. In this way the core goal is to develop the space from “city on the street” to “city on the river”. Subsequently, the Dreisam is at the centre of a diverse and experienceable urban space for everyone that effectively connects the neighbourhoods and city on both sides.
