Huangshi - Industrial Heritage Donggang Iron and Steel Plant, CN

Transformation of abandoned heavy industrial areas into heritage sites

Huangshi is located in southeastern Hubei province in a major lake district along the Yangtze River. The town looks back on a long and successful industrial history. Today many of its heavy industrial facilities have become obsolete. By realizing their great potential and value as an industrial heritage the city decided their preservation and transformation into a coherent heritage park along the historical railroad lines. First steps are surveys and evaluations of the existing structures in order to find out their suitability for educational, cultural, touristic and other uses. A concept study will make suggestions for the industrial heritage sites and their further uses and serve as a base for several pilot projects.
The DongGang steel plant with its buildings, railway tracks and open spaces will be one of the first projects of this kind. The iron and steel production structures such as cokery, casting houses, rolling and tube mill will offer spaces for museums, cultural events and fairs, sports and leisure and also for trade.
