Opening ceremony for the Biomedical Centre at LMU Munich
Oct. 26, 2015
The Biomedical Centre (BMC) at Ludwig-Maximilians-University is one of Germanys largest new research developments in recent years.
The landscape designed by Latz + Partner is the campuss calling card. The busiest areas, such as the lecture hall foyer, library and cafeteria, look out to the trees on the campus square. A narrow water rill on its eastern side is lined by fastigiate oaks. It leads to an inner green space which is enclosed by buildings. Rainwater from roofs and surfaces is collected and treated in a pool; it then spills into open rills and shallow grass swales where it infiltrates the ground. In the west, meadows, whose soils have reduced nutrient levels, merge into a park created on offset land. The new circulation network connects the parks squares, meadows and airy groves into a local recreation area which is used by all – academics, students and residents living in the surrounding neighbourhoods.
Bavarian Minister-President Horst Seehofer and Federal Minister of Research and Education Prof Dr Johanna Wanka, along with other high-ranking guests in the field of science and politics, have been invited today to the opening of the Biomedical Centre on the Grosshadern-Martinsried Campus with Prof Dr Bernd Huber, president of LMU Munich.
