1st prize at the 2015 OLB Foundation Award for Architecture and Engineering
Nov. 9, 2015
The jury of the OLB Foundation awarded first prize for the landscape architecture and open space planning to Willy-Brandt-Platz and Weser dyke at Harbour Worlds Bremerhaven ; over a hundred projects were submitted from both architecture and landscape architecture disciplines.
Laudation:
The former old and new harbour areas in Bremerhaven provide a forum for place-making and the development of new inner-city landscapes within an urban context. The Willy-Brandt-Platz and Weser dyke projects, submitted by landscape architects Latz+Partner, in the working partnership Latz-Riehl-Partner, is exemplary in shaping a new place with a future-oriented, eye-catching design concept which offers a wide range of uses. Based on engineering structures that protect against wind and floods and that control the natural elements and tides, a distinctive and highly recognisable place was created, presenting best possible amenity value.
The design showcases how – in the face of climate change and rising sea levels with ever higher dykes – vibrant urban life can be fostered through the creation of a maritime habitat with direct contact to the river, in the form of a square and promenade. Using almost minimalist maritime design and landscape elements, the function, form and materiality, for example in the characteristic multi-functional street furniture, provide an inviting public space for uninterrupted use by all visitors. It is a leading-edge landmark and lighthouse project for future attractive coastal protection.
